How We Enrich Our Soil

As a no-till urban farm, we use compost from Bloom Soil to build up our soil layer after removing clay from our growing space. We use Bloom's Woody Blend, sourced from biosolids from D.C. Water, in our 50-foot growing rows to amend our soil each year and enrich our produce and flowers.

Because we are an all-volunteer organization without our own vehicles, Bloom’s affordable offerings that they deliver straight to our fields bolster our commitment to regenerative, sustainable urban agriculture.

Concerning potential PFAS levels, Bloom “consistently tests far below set limits for pathogens and heavy metals” and shows levels of PFOS and PFOA “many thousands of times lower than in food packaging materials, hundreds of times lower than in products like ketchup, organic tomato sauce, and cosmetics, and ten times lower than the levels measured in dust.” Because Bloom’s biosolids come from residential water sources, rather than industrial, the levels of PFAS are much lower.
